Southwest Oregon has a rich history related to gold mining. In 1850, placer gold (free gold mixed in stream gravel) deposits were being mined and by the 1880s, lode (hard rock mining) operations began. But during World War II, War Production Board Order L-208 brought about a curtailment of gold mining and production virtually ceased.
